The songwriters originally idea near giving the song to Kelly Clarkson, then Daughtry; Adam Lambert recorded it, but according to Busbee, he "merely wasn't the right fit." Composition [edit]

"Attempt" was written and composed by Ben West and Busbee, while product was handled by Greg Kurstin, who as well produced her previous single, "Blow Me (1 Last Buss)."[9] It is a popular[10] ballad[xi] modelled on 1980s FM Rock, built effectually ii-book arrangement, whereby the verses are quiet and the chorus is loud, co-ordinate to Idolator's Carl Willot.[12] [13] Lyrically, information technology is an ode to taking risks with love, no matter the consequences. It also talks almost hanging onto one's dreams and aspirations, even if it means taking risks. "Where there is desire there is gonna be a flame," sings Pinkish on the chorus. "Where there is a flame, someone's leap to become burned. But just because it burns, doesn't mean yous're gonna dice. Yous gotta get upwardly and attempt, attempt, attempt."[14] The vocal was originally composed in the central of A# major, with a moderate tempo of 103 beats per minute. Pink's version, however, sees the key lifted to D major – 4 semitones higher – with a slightly faster tempo of 104 beats per infinitesimal. "Endeavor" follows a chord progression of Half-dozen-Three-7-I, and Pink'south vocals bridge two octave and a major third from D3 to F#5 (harmony).[15]

The midtempo rails finds Pink mourning, lamenting and musing on a relationship that is breaking down at its cadre. It hurts, but this song is a salve over the wound."[17]

Dean Piper of Mirror Online wrote: "The stand out rails and an obvious international radio hit is 'Try.' Think how big and fabulous 'Who Knew' was – 'Try' is on the same wavelength."[18] Sarah Rodman of The Boston Globe called information technology a "keeper and an urging-to-victory battle weep,"[19] Robert Copsey of Digital Spy described it every bit "a ballad of the stadium-filling, lighter-waving diverseness."[11] while Caryn Ganz of Spin called it a "breakup salve."[20] Lewis Corner of Digital Spy gave the vocal four out of possible five, writing: "Although she may non be treading new ground sonically, her passionate tones and solid determination will continue her chart presence - and rightly so."[21] Nonetheless, Sal Cinquemani of Camber Magazine was less positive, writing that "the midtempo 'Try' doesn't push Pinkish forrard either, and information technology's marred by singsong lyrics."[22] Greg Kot of Chicago Tribune besides shared the same idea, writing: "No one, not even Pink, tin can save lyrics such as these."[23]

It was released on October 10, 2012.[39] It was directed by Floria Sigismondi and choreographed past the Golden Boyz (who accept worked with the likes of Madonna and Britney Spears) and stunt choreographer, Sebastien Stella. It was inspired by the Apache dance, a highly-stylized Parisian street performance. "Making this video was the near fun I've ever had in my unabridged career," said Pinkish. "I never wanted it to end. It's my favorite video ever."[40]

Pink took to her Twitter page to record her mother, Judith'south, reaction later showing her the risqué dance moves on the clip. "My mom, later on seeing the new video... 'Wow, dearest. I'm speechless. And uncomfortable. No 1 can e'er say yous play it safe.'" Pink'southward love interest is played by Broadway dancer Colt Prattes.[40]

Synopsis [edit]

The video is summed up in ii locations: The indoor sequence where Pinkish performs a dramatic dance routine with her partner Colt Prattes, and the outdoor scene where they collide into i another in a desert. The video features flashes of color and is heavily metaphorical, portraying an unhealthy, tormented relationship through artistic usage of the two performers' bodies.[40]

Reception [edit]

James Montgomery of MTV News praised the video, writing of it: "Despite the weighty bailiwick matter, the clip besides manages to exist equally restrained as the sinewy bodies it showcases. In a lot of ways, it reminds yous of Sigur Ros' arty 'Fjögur píanó' slice — you know, the ane with the naked Shia LaBeouf — only minus the erudite sense of self importance. This is, first and foremost, a pop video, only it aspires to be and then much more. And in that regard, it is the kind of video that only Pinkish would make. She is certainly a huge star, and yet, she delights in continually pushing by the restraints of the pop genre. 'Endeavor' certainly works equally a video, and notwithstanding, one could also see it beingness performed on the stage, accompanied past an orchestra. It is big, it is beautiful, information technology is definitely a work of art, and it is uniquely, unquestionably Pink. She pushes herself — and, actually, the entire concept of what a popular video tin can be — to the limit, and pulls information technology off with effortless grace. Your move, everyone else."[10]

Sam Lansky of Idolator wrote: "Although Pink'south videos are often driven by self-consciousness and irony, she plays it totally straight in this one, giving an emotive performance that communicates volumes, all while executing impressively acrobatic trip the light fantastic toe moves."[42] Jason Lipshut of Billboard pointed out that watching Pinkish and Prattes "appoint in centre-wringing physical movements" makes it "easy to run across why the popular star and then thoroughly enjoyed the shoot."[43] Katie Hasty of HitFix felt the video allowed Pink to prove off "her showmanship and physical abilities," adding, "It'south very powerful, particularly since both performers hold their own in the discussion of control…Plus the styling is rad."[44]

A complete artist."[52] Billboard ranked the performance 2nd best of the dark behind Psy'south Gangnam Style labeling Pink equally "the quintessential entertainer."[41]
